Selena smiled, and Everett's upset stomach, which had just started to soothe, suddenly clenched again. He frowned, leaning in with a serious tone. "Selena, I'm your husband. Who will you talk to if you won't open up to me?" His voice dropped to a more intense, almost brooding pitch on those last few words.

Selena nodded. "Oh, a husband whose heart is with another woman? How exactly am I supposed to talk to you?"

Hadn't she tried to talk enough over the past three years? She even felt like she'd topped the list of women with hopeless efforts.

Everett was left without words.

Selena, quite used to this by now, didn't bother saying anything more. She quietly cleared the table and headed back to her room alone.

She climbed back into her bed and shut her eyes. She didn't know whether Everett returned or not. By the time she opened her eyes again, daylight was streaming in. She glanced at the bed. The jerk was nowhere to be seen. Selena needed to visit her parents' graves up on the hill, so she didn't dawdle. She got up swiftly, tidied up her bed, put on a headband, and stepped outside to freshen up.

Breakfast was all set, featuring all of Selena's favorites from the local breakfast carts back home.

She pulled out a chair and sat down, the mouthwatering aroma lifting her spirits. Truly, good food is the best mood lifter.
