Lucky for Selena, Josh called up, moaned about boredom, and begged her to hang out. She jumped at the chance-any excuse to catch a break was a godsend!

But as she got ready and grabbed her purse to head out, Everett was already parked outside, waiting like a hawk. He honked lightly. "Selena, hop in!"

Just the sight of him made Selena's knees go weak, but she knew better than to cross him. That'd only spell trouble later on. Weighing her options, she figured it was best to just go along for the ride.

When they reached the hospital, Everett parked, leaned over to unbuckle her seatbelt, and then took her hand, guiding her to the elevator. Inside Josh's room was Everett's mother, Carolina. It had been ages since Selena last saw her, and she still had that regal elegance about her.

Given their ongoing mother-in-law and daughter-in-law dynamic, Selena figured she'd better keep things smooth, even if they weren't exactly besties. "Hi, Carolina, you're here too," she said, trying to sound casual. Everett gave a curt nod. "Mother."

Carolina's eyes flicked over them, pausing at their clasped hands before her face settled back to its usual calm. With a slight nod, she acknowledged them. Then, as if she couldn't get out of there fast enough, she said, "Since you're here, I'll take my leave." She gave Josh a quick nod and strutted out, heels clicking decisively.
