Chapter 316

The phone kept ringing in her ear, a relentless buzz, but nobody picked up. Eventually, it just hung up on its own. Selena felt a flicker of frustration. She thought about dialing again, but then another wave of pain hit her, making her drop the phone. It clattered to the floor and skidded under the couch. She bit down on her lower lip so hard it nearly bled, trying to calm her body and wait for the pain to pass. She knew she couldn't just sit there and hope for the best; it could be dangerous for her baby.

Using all the strength she had left, she managed to get out of bed. But the pain in her abdomen was so intense she couldn't stand up straight. She half-walked, half-crawled towards the door. When she finally reached the top of the stairs, she was soaked in sweat and shivering with cold. Clutching her stomach, she called out, her voice shaky, "Ava, Ava... somebody, please come..." By the time she finished shouting, she was nearly spent. Summoning the last of her energy, she knocked an antique vase off the stair's landing.

Luckily, it was around dawn, and Ava was usually up by then. The noise jolted her awake, her heart racing as she opened her eyes.

Sensing something was wrong, she quickly threw on a coat and rushed out.

When she saw Selena at the top of the stairs, face pale and nightgown stained with blood, Ava felt a chill run down her spine.

"Ma'am, what's happened?"

Selena's face was twisted with pain, and she couldn't muster the strength to explain. Through gritted teeth, she managed to say, "Take me to the hospital."

"Right away!"
