Chapter 449

Dusk had settled in, casting a soft glow over everything. Everett stood in the hallway, staring out into the night, the weight of his thoughts pressing heavily on his brow. The gloom felt inescapable.

He pulled out a pack of cigarettes, slid one out and placed it between his lips, lighting it with a quick flick. Taking a deep drag, he let the nicotine seep into his system, hoping it would calm his restless mind. Inside the hospital room, Josh beckoned Selena over. He gave a nod to the butler, who promptly handed her a document. As Selena flipped through it, her eyes widened in disbelief. "Grandpa, this..." she stammered, her voice laced with shock, "this is too much. I can't accept it!"

The document represented nearly all of Josh's wealth. Beyond the real estate, cash, stocks, and various investments, the most significant part were his shares in Bennett Corporation, now to be held in her name. She tried to push the document back, but Josh gently held her hand down. "These were meant for you and Mateo, but since Mateo... I have no choice but to let you hold them. Without a husband to protect you, keeping such a fortune could be dangerous." "Let this wealth serve its purpose," he continued. "I'm getting old, can't catch my breath after just a few words, and I'm not up to handling that rascal Everett anymore. I worry I won't be able to protect you down the road."

He gently stroked Selena's hair, his eyes filled with love. "I had hoped you and Everett could make it work. At least after I'm gone, someone who truly cares for him would be by his side. But seeing his behavior, I can't ask you to stay tied to him." "You're a smart girl. It's up to you to decide what happens between you and Everett. Handle this document wisely, and you can get the outcome you want. This is the last thing I can do for you," Josh said.

Selena's tears flowed freely. She knew the significance of this document. The battles Everett had with his uncles were over this very thing. Josh was effectively putting her in his place, granting her authority in Bennett Corporation.
