Chapter 687

The man's voice broke through the quiet like a sudden gust of wind.

"I pushed her away. It's what I wanted, but still..."

He pressed hard against his chest.

"Turns out, it still hurts."

Alex was still processing the hint of self-mockery in his voice when she caught sight of his sudden pallor. His eyes filled with pain, and he coughed up a startling gush of blood. The red seeped menacingly into his white shirt-it was a sight that struck like a punch.

"Mr. Everett!" Alex's voice shot up in panic.

At the hospital, Callum, clad in his doctor's white coat, rushed into the room. Everett lay there, looking as frail as the sheets that covered him, his face ghostly pale.

Callum skimmed the medical chart at the bedside, his shock evident. He forgot any past grudges and blurted out, "When did this happen? How could there be signs of rejection?"

Everett had bounced back remarkably well after his heart transplant, almost like any regular guy, thanks to his youth and active lifestyle. He cast a glance at Callum but stayed mum.

Alex stepped in to explain, "It might be from that car crash over three years ago. Back then, Mr. Everett was hit hard by grief-losing Josh and his wife leaving. He never really took the time to heal. It was in France when he felt off and got it checked."

Callum's hand shook a bit.

If that's the case, he was more involved than he cared to admit.
