Everett's deep, dark eyes were fixed on the table as his slender fingers tapped rhythmically, like he was trying to make up his mind about something.

Joy held her breath for a moment. "Everett, is something bothering you? I mean, I did kind of spring this meeting on you out of the blue. My bad."

"If you're busy, we can totally catch up another time."

She played it cool, using the old reverse psychology trick, calm and considerate.

Everett saw right through her little game, but it didn't matter much to him. He wasn't interested in her, no need to get into her intentions, but her brother, Abraham, was another story.

Abraham was like a godson to his grandfather, a few years older, making him a sort of god-brother. Back in the day, Abraham's career soared, thanks in part to Josh's backing.

Josh was a guy with vision, knew how to look ahead. He understood that

everyone grows old and steps down eventually. When his old pals retired, he had to groom new successors.

That's how Abraham climbed his way to influence. Of course, he had the chops; without that, no amount of help would've done the trick.

But like they say, nothing lasts forever. After Josh passed, the power scene shifted, and Abraham became a hot commodity, with everyone trying to win him over.

If Everett didn't build new bridges quickly, the goodwill Josh had with Abraham would start to fade.
