Joy gazed at Everett with hopeful eyes, but his handsome face remained as unreadable as ever. He was as detached as a stranger. "Mother, Joy and I just aren't meant to be. She's like a sister to me, and calling off the engagement won't stop her from finding someone else. As for my own marriage, there's no need for you to worry about it anymore."

Carolina's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Everett, what are you trying to say?"

Everett let out a small, mocking laugh, choosing not to answer. He didn't spare Joy another glance as he picked up the coat the waiter handed him and strode out of the room without a backward glance.

Joy crumpled to the floor, sobbing her heart out.

Carolina sank back into her chair, feeling defeated. Even though Everett hadn't spelled it out, she knew exactly what he meant. He'd made up his mind. He'd either stay single or get back together with Selena. After all the twists and turns, he was going back to his old flame! All her careful plans had been for nothing.
