Chloe’s voice made me break eye contact with the man. “Ashton, this is the lady I mentioned who wants to swap rooms. Why don’t you two talk it over?”

I stepped forward. “Hi, I’m Elaine Hart. Would it be possible to switch rooms?”

“No,” he said flatly.

Irritation bubbled up inside me, along with a streak of stubbornness. “Why not?”

He just looked at me without responding, then draped an army–green towel over his shoulder and walked past. The cold water made me shiver. Chloe came over. “E… Elaine, right? Don’t take it personally. That’s Ashton Drake. He’s not exactly smooth with women. I’ll talk to him later.”

I had my own pride. “Don’t bother,” I said loudly. “That room won’t make me a saint. Whoever wants it can have it.”

Chloe pulled me aside. “Take it easy. He’s ex–military. Push his buttons, and he might just carry you out and dump you outside.”

I laughed, realizing I’d mistaken a decorated soldier for some criminal.

“I’m serious, Elaine. There’s this widow, Synthia, from across the street. She kept knocking on his door non–stop. He ended up wrapping her in a sheet and throwing her out. Everyone saw it.”

Another widow. I seemed to attract them.

“Really? Did she try to make a move on him?” I asked, intrigued.
