“Thank you for accepting him and loving him, Elaine.” Alice handed me a cup of tea, her eyes filled with eager warmth as she spoke.

Her words struck a chord deep within me. Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, but I kept my smile steady. “You’re making it sound like no one else would want him.”

Alice pursed her lips, an expression of soft amusement, and I reached for the tea she had prepared.

As I took a sip, the tea’s fragrant aroma filled my senses. It was refreshing, unlike anything I had ever tasted before. The river water truly made a difference–it gave the tea a clarity and purity I couldn’t quite describe.

“My brother refused to look for a girlfriend for my sake,” Alice said softly, her voice tinged with guilt. “He was afraid that his future wife wouldn’t be good to me, and he thought that I…” She trailed off, unable to finish her sentence.

Her reluctance spoke volumes. I could tell she was worried–worried that Ashton hadn’t told me about her condition. She was afraid that if I knew the truth, I might think less of him or even walk away.

I took another sip of the tea, letting its warmth calm me. Then I said gently, “That you have a weak immune system? Look at me, Alice. Do I seem like such a superficial person to you?”

Relief washed over her face, and a smile replaced her earlier tension.
