Alice had grown so lonely that I could tell she wanted me to stay longer. Her quiet demeanor couldn’t hide the subtle glances she gave me, or the way she lingered when we spoke. I only had two days off work, but the thought of leaving her alone tugged at my heart. So, I extended my leave by another two days, just to keep her company.

But all good things must come to an end, and eventually, I had to leave.

Before I left, Alice insisted on making me coffee and packing food for me. She had cooked everything herself, using flower petals in some of the dishes, giving them a whimsical and delicate touch. She gave me the best of everything she had, her offerings a reflection of the genuine affection she had for

me.

Her kindness and thoughtfulness left me with an unexplainable sense of responsibility.

“Elaine, please visit me whenever you can,” Alice said, her eyes avoiding mine.

I could see she was holding back tears, unwilling to let me see her cry. She was the kind of girl whose spirit was strong, even though her body was fragile.

“Of course,” I replied, keeping my words brief.

A lump formed in my throat, and I didn’t dare say more. I feared that if I did, I would start crying before Alice did. Goodbyes always felt like the softest knife–a wound that lingered long after the moment had passed.

As I hugged her goodbye, I said, “I’ve already asked a friend to help find a doctor for you. Once everything is arranged, Ash and I will come get you.”
