“What do you mean you can’t find her?” Calen shot Albert a sharp glare. “I told you she’s in her office.”

Albert hesitated, shifting uncomfortably. “But the guard said-”

Calen’s jaw tightened, his patience wearing thin. He had spent the entire day drowning in work, and now his secretary couldn’t locate one person. One person in the entire of Macau. Just how big was Macau? It was damn smaller than Los Angeles!

hiding? She’s supposed to be working.”

“Well, maybe she’s-” Albert hesitated. “She’s hiding from you? Perhaps she-”

“Izzy is hiding from me?” Calen cut Albert off sharply, slamming his hand on the table. Papers fluttered as his secretary flinched. “Don’t be absurd! Why would she need to hide? She has a job to do, and so do you, Albert!”

“I checked her office three times,” Albert stammered. “The- The security confirmed she left the premises earlier this afternoon, but no one saw where she went.”

Calen rose from his chair abruptly, the scrape of wood against the floor loud in the otherwise silent room. His broad shoulders tensed as he rounded the desk. “A whole day wasted,” he muttered, more to himself than to Albert. “It’s her birthday, for God’s sake. And I’m stuck here with unfinished work while you run around like a headless chicken.”

Albert swallowed hard. “Sir, I-”

“Save it,” Calen snapped, his voice colder now. He grabbed his coat from the back of his chair and shrugged it on. “She didn’t leave for no reason. And if she’s not answering her phone, there’s only one explanation.”
