“She didn’t bail her mother out?” Izzy glanced up, her brows furrowing as she turned toward Liam, who was lounging on the couch, a book resting in his hands.

Liam nodded, barely looking up.

Izzy leaned against the edge of the bed. “Why? Was it the money? Or had Monica finally given up on her mother?”

Liam flipped a page. “She hasn’t left the apartment in days. She’s been ordering food, so we know she’s still alive.”

Izzy exhaled slowly, turning her gaze toward the window. That sounded harsh, but she didn’t comment on it.

After catching Amalia trying to pawn the stolen property deeds again, Izzy finally recovered everything that belonged to her. The trap had worked. There was nothing left tying her to them.

She inhaled deeply. Cecil and Calen’s situation was far from over, but Monica and Amalia’s was almost done. It was time for her to talk to Monica.

The next day, Izzy stood outside the worn–down apartment door they had rented. Without hesitation, she knocked.

The door creaked open, revealing Monica on the other side. She looked awful. Her hair was a tangled mess, dark circles shadowed her eyes, and the oversized hoodie she wore hung loosely over her frame. The stale scent of beer and unwashed clothes wafted through the small opening.

Monica stared at Izzy with dull eyes before scoffing. “Are you here to mock me?”

Izzy met her gaze evenly. “I’m here to talk.”

Monica leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. “We have nothing to talk about. My mother’s in prison, and I’m stuck in this dump. What else is there to say?”

Izzy snorted, crossing her own arms. “So, you’ve been abandoned by both Cecil and Calen and instead of doing something about it, you’re rotting away in here?”

Monica’s jaw tightened. “What do you want?”

“I just want to talk.”

Monica let out a breath, then suddenly gave Izzy an unsettling smile. “Aren’t you scared? What if I decide to hurt you right now?”

Izzy smirked. “You can try. I can handle myself.”

Monica studied her for a long moment before stepping aside. “Fine. Come in.”
