Carrie blinked rapidly, as though trying to push back tears, and nodded. “You’re right,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.

Her phone buzzed on the table, lighting up with Camille’s name. Reece, ever perceptive, set his fork down and smiled gently. “Take it. I’ll step outside for a smoke, get some fresh air.”
