Chapter 0725

Nina

The cool summer night air was a refreshing feeling; it was much more moderate here, where my dad's mansion resided in the north. Nothing at all like the heat and thick humidity of the jungle where Mila had created her horrific kingdom.

"I just can't believe it," I whispered, hanging my head over the stone railing of the balcony we stood on. "Just when I think I've begun to understand this godforsaken family, it's as if another layer gets added."

Enzo, who had been quiet for most of the day, sighed as the wind ruffled his hair. "And now he wants us to help him clean up his mess," he muttered.

It was true; my father wanted to recruit us for his cause. He had promised not only payment in return, but status for our pack. In exchange, Mila needed to be taken down; her mind was gone, or so he had said. Peace could not be achieved in this realm if her cult continued to grow.

And no matter how shitty it felt, my dad was right. Mila was a threat to society. She had bound me and my husband in silver ropes, forced Enzo to go through with multiple fights to the death, and imprisoned all of us. I didn't know if we were even the first she had done that to.

Yet... I still couldn't wrap my head around it. To think that my father, the great and mighty Alpha King, had in part caused this... It broke my heart.

Enzo, as though reading my thoughts, wandered over to me and wrapped his arms around me from behind. "It'll be a quick and simple job," he said gently, tucking a strand of hair behind my ears. "Your father was right-"

"Yes, I know. With our pack being so small and unknown, we'll be the perfect choice. He'll train you all as assassins, and then it'll just be a matter of sneaking into her fortress and taking her out. But that's not what I'm worried about. Not really."

"What is it, then?" Enzo asked.
