Chapter 0741

Nina

The scent of roasted vegetables and chicken filled the room as the dishes were brought out to the table. My mom, Lori and I exchanged amused glances when the others began digging in the instant the covers were taken off of the plates.

"Aldric, look at how ravenous your trainees are," my mother teased quietly. "Maybe you're going too hard on them."

My father merely grinned. "Their bodies will soon regulate, Angelica," he said. He then raised his glass of wine for a toast. "Good job today, all of you. Please, enjoy your meal and do not let Angelica deter you from eating your fill." "Oh, Aldric." My mother punched my father's arm lightly as the others held up their glasses and drank.

Beside me, as the din of excited chatter and the clinking of cutlery filled the room, Enzo sat quietly. I chanced a look over at him, only to find that he hadn't even picked up his fork yet.

"You okay?" I whispered, leaning a little closer and nudging his knee under the table with mine. "Are you not hungry?"

Enzo merely shrugged. "No, I was just... thinking," he replied coolly. I watched as he almost mechanically picked up his fork and began to prod at his food, occasionally popping a piece of chicken or a carrot into his mouth but hardly eating in his usual enthusiastic way at all.

"Nina." My father's voice suddenly caught my attention, and I looked up to see him looking at me from down the table.

"Yes?"

"I noticed you were in the library for several hours today," he said. "Reading anything interesting?"

Before I could answer, my mother interjected, "I gave her that ancestry book I was telling you about," she said.

"Ah." My father nodded slowly as he popped a piece of roast chicken into his mouth. "Family history is an interesting subject. I hope you're enjoying your studies."

I felt myself blush a bit as the eyes around the table began to turn to me. In that moment, I was staunchly reminded of the journal I had found.

"Er, yeah," I said. "Actually, I found a..."
