Chapter 0791

Nina

The camp had long since gone quiet, save for the sound of the wind rustling through the canopy and the occasional critter rooting around for crumbs. Beside me, Enzo slept soundly, still healing after his ordeal. He had been sleeping on and off all day, and I had hardly left his side.

But now, it was time for us to venture out of our tent and into the forest.

With a gentle hand on his arm, I shook him out of his sleep. "Enzo," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "It's time."

His eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, a flicker of confusion passed across his features. But then, realization dawned on him, and he nodded, reaching for my hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze beneath the blanket.

We dressed in silence, keeping our movements careful and deliberate so as not to wake anyone in the adjacent tents. We had to be quiet, and we had to slip out of the camp and back in without being seen.

After all, we couldn't exactly have people asking where we were going; what would we tell them? That we were traipsing off into the middle of the woods in the dead of night to perform a ritual that would bind the spirit of my dead twin sister to my baby?

As we slipped out of the tent, a cool breeze blew across my cheek, causing me to shiver and momentarily consider turning back. I paused, clutching my arms, unsure of what we were about to do. But as Enzo's fingers intertwined with mine, I felt bolstered.

We had to do this. It felt like there was no other option.

We made our way through the camp, our soft footsteps hardly making any noise against the ground. Up ahead, the treeline seemed to be waiting for us, dark but not as ominous as one would expect.
