Esther gazed at Thomas’ photograph on the tombstone, tears welling in her eyes. She used to wonder why Thomas had been so kind to her, and now she understood it was because of her mother.

She recalled a time when Liliane would often ask Billy why Esther could marry Bradley while she couldn’t. She questioned why Martin treated them so differently.
