Jasper walked mechanically, got to the burned body, and knelt heavily. He reached out his hand, but as soon as his finger brushed the body, he pulled back like it shocked him.

“Esther! I’m so sorry!

“This is all my fault! I promised to keep you safe, but I let you down!

“Esther, I… I…” Jasper’s hands trembled as he tried to hold it. “I’ll take you back.”

Bradley seized Jasper by the collar, his voice filled with threat. “Jasper, you can’t touch her!”

“Can’t? Bradley, what gives you the right to stop me?”

Bradley couldn’t believe this burned body was Esther, but he wouldn’t let Jasper near her, even if she was just a body.
