Chapter 0071

Reluctantly, Emma went upstairs and knocked on Mary’s door. She found her already asleep, dressed in comfortable athletic clothes. Remembering how little Mary had slept the night before, Emma hesitated to disturb her. She returned downstairs, determined to serve Maximus herself.

“Emma, where’s Mary? Why are you the one serving me dinner? Was I not clear?” Maximus said, standing abruptly and heading toward Mary’s room.

He burst into her room, slamming the door open. Mary was startled awake, barely processing what was happening before Maximus yanked her up by her sweatshirt and dragged her toward the dining room.

“Mary, you should know that being my wife comes wit responsibilities. It’s not just about taking my name and enjoying my money. From now on, household chores, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are your responsibility. Emma needs help keeping this house in order, and since you have so much free time, you’ll assist her. You don’t work or contribute anything useful to this household, so you’ll help with the cleaning and cooking.”

Mary was stunned. It wasn’t the tasks themselves that shocked her but the anger and hatred in Maximus’s eyes. The rest of the week was a nightmare She faced constant reprimands and punishments, such as being denied meals, for even minor mistakes.

Mary began to dread his presence. She trembled every time he walked into the house and only felt relief once he left. Still, she didn’t let his behavior break her spirit. She kept herself busy during the day, wearing loose clothes while cleaning the house with Emma. The two women formed a close bond, sharing conversations that lightened their burdens. But in the evenings, Mary would change into something more presentable, bracing herself for Maximus’s return.

Despite her efforts, nothing seemed to please him. He criticized everything–especially her coffee. It was always too bitter, too weak, or not the right temperature. One day, she served it slightly hotter than usual, hoping to meet his standards. Instead, he burned his mouth and shouted at her.
