Chapter 0075

Fred left the mansion fuming, but not before reminding Maximus that Mary needed to be seen at the hospital. If not, he would have no choice but to inform Catherine of everything.

Once Fred was gone, Maximus approached Mary, who was sitting quietly in the garden, still trying in vain to recover her lost memories. Her mind felt like a puzzle missing critical pieces, her memory frozen at the day after their wedding.

“Mary, how are you feeling?” he asked cautiously.

“I’m fine,” she replied softly. “My body aches, but I think the medicine will help.”

“Do you want me to help you to your room?”

“I think I can manage. I don’t want to trouble you.”

“Come on,” he said gently, crouching down. “Hold onto my neck. I’ll carry you.”

Still dazed, she looped her arm around his neck. As he carried her, Maximus couldn’t help but notice how frail she had become in such a short time. Living with him had clearly taken a toll.

“Sir, is the missus all right?” Matthew asked as Maximus carried Mary through the front door.

“She’s fine,” Maximus said curtly. “Just a bit unwell. I’m taking her to her room.

Η

Matthew’s expression betrayed his disbelief. He couldn’t reconcile the fragile woman in Maximus’s arms with the disturbing truth of her situation. But he said nothing, knowing his opinion was irrelevant.

Maximus took Mary to the master bedroom and gently laid her on the bed. Mary blinked in surprise, unsure what to make of this unexpected gesture. Just the day before, he had made it clear she wasn’t welcome in this room.
