Chapter 0242

After the last time she saw Maximus, Audrey was devastated. She felt she had done everything in her power to win his favor. She was a girl from a good family, young and beautiful. Audrey took pride in her looks–any man would be proud to have her by his side. But, unfortunately, the man she desired didn’t see it that way. Their relationship had ended after only a couple of months.

Winning Maximus’s love had become an obsession for her, even though he had been clear with her from the start. Audrey believed she could change his mind. Locked in her room, replaying the brief moments she had shared with him, she thought back to their first date.

[Valeria, two months earlier]

Audrey had managed to get Maximus’s number by snooping through her brother Alex’s phone. She had been utterly captivated by the handsome, elegant man with a striking face. His gift had seemed so personal to her. She had just turned 18, officially an adult. She could make her own decisions and date whoever she wanted. If she liked this man, why not pursue him? The age gap didn’t seem like a problem to her, though it wasn’t the only issue.

She had discussed Maximus with her best friend, who warned her to stay away from him. Her friend told her that this “Palmer guy” was a notorious womanizer, especially with girls her age. He’d go on a few dates and, once he got what he wanted, would discard them like nothing. “And why wouldn’t he?” her friend had said. “His wife is absolutely stunning. Despite her age, she’s still breathtakingly beautiful, with those deep blue eyes that make her Hook otherworldly. A man like Maximus Palmer would never leave her for some teenager.”

But Audrey had ignored her friend’s warnings and texted him anyway. At first, Maximus had been reluctant to meet her. However, Audrey had come up with an excuse, claiming she wanted to thank him in person for the expensive bracelet he had gifted her. For Maximus, it had been nothing more than a gesture of kindness, something he often did for the people around him. But to Audrey, it was as if he had gone out of his way to pick a unique piece just for her.

After several calls and messages, Maximus finally agreed to meet her–not because he was interested, but because he wanted to set things straight. He had no intention of jeopardizing his friendship with Alex for a fling with his sister. It was the right thing to do, he thought. He reserved a table at a random café–at least, random from his perspective. When Audrey arrived and saw the luxurious setting, she was thrilled. To her, this meant she wasn’t just anyone to him.

How are you?” she greeted him with a big smile.
