Marcus dropped Serenity off at home after a thorough check–up, but he still couldn’t get the young man he had just met out of his mind. He couldn’t deny that the boy was the spitting image of his friend, which left him with a bittersweet feeling. At first, it had pained Marcus to learn that Serenity wasn’t Peter’s daughter. It meant there was nothing left of his friend in this world. Now that the truth had come to light, he didn’t know whether to feel relieved or uneasy. He couldn’t guess the young man’s intentions. “Why did he show up out of nowhere? How could neither Peter nor I have known about his existence?‘ he thought, watching his daughter sleep.

This was something he couldn’t forgive Leonardo for. No matter how old the man was, what he had done was going to cost him dearly. Marcus’s family was his priority, and he wouldn’t tolerate such a grave insult. But for now, his anger had to wait. The most important thing was fixing things with his wife. He had thought about driving to Galea, but the delay at the doctor’s office while they checked on Serenity made him decide to take a flight instead, saving as much time as possible.

After a 45–minute trip, he arrived at the private airport in Galea and drove straight to Peter’s house. He hadn’t set foot there since that torturous night, just as he hadn’t seen Valerie. As he got closer, memories of his first marriage and his visits to Peter came flooding back, each one heavier than the last. A knot formed in his throat. On his way to the house, he stopped at a florist and bought a bouquet with some of Valerie’s favorite flowers. He couldn’t show up empty–handed.
