Chapter 0521

Camille, having seen Marcus storm out, went to find the girl she considered her daughter. She found Valerie in tears, embraced her, and said:

“Valerie, my love, I don’t think this is going to work. Have you thought about whether it might be better to end things?”

“What?”

“Valerie, darling, I’m not blind. You’re not like this because of Marcus. You’re like this because of that other man. I’ve told you before–he’s not here. He was just a youthful dream. You only spent four months with him. You didn’t get to know his quirks, his moods, how he handled problems, or how he’d take care of you after your child was born.”

“A marriage is built over time, not just by saying ‘I do.‘ For example, take my case. My husband was a hopeless romantic before we married. He spoiled me with gifts, flowers, cuddles, and compliments. He was amazing in bed. But once we got married–oh, my dear–it turned into hell. Everything I said or did annoyed him. He’d throw food at me, yell at me, and shove me. He never hit me outright but would push me. When we fought, he’d lose control, smashing things instead of touching me. My girls were terrified of him. Whenever he came home from work, they’d hide.”

“Camille, Marcus has never been like that.”

“Exactly. Even before marrying you, Marcus was a gentleman. Everything between you two happened by mutual agreement. He’s always respected you. Even when he first met you, he never used the fact that he supported Serenity financially against you. Tell me, Valerie, what reason did Marcus have to take care of you and Serenity? Sure, Peter was his best friend, but he could’ve ignored you both. He didn’t. Instead, he cared for you with respect and empathy, never expecting anything in return.
