Chapter 0534

He continued, his voice heavy with regret. “I was in a coma for five years. The person who helped me wasn’t anyone known to my family. If Frank had found out I was alive, he would have had me killed. I had no choice.

“Theodore Bennett saved me and gave me back my life. But that salvation came at a cost–it meant sacrificing us. By the time I could walk again, I searched for you. I found you… but eight years had passed. You weren’t single anymore.”

Peter’s gaze softened as he recounted the memory. “I still remember that day. I couldn’t walk properly yet and was sitting in an elegant Mercedes. You were at a park near Serenity’s school. You and she were playing together, laughing like children. Your bodyguards were watching from a distance. You looked so happy… so beautiful. But to me, you were a stranger. I didn’t remember you.”

His voice trembled as he concluded. “Mary, I lost my memory for 20 years. I’m only now starting to recover it. God, you don’t know how hard this is for me. Back then, you were just a face in the crowd, and it was easy to decide to let you go. Now I regret it. I should have opened that car door. I should have walked over to you. But I didn’t. And now it’s too late, Mary. It’s too late.”

“Why do you insist that it’s too late?”

“Mary…” Peter began, his voice heavy with emotion. “You’re married. You’re Marcus Bartz’s wife–my best friend’s wife. Marcus is my brother, the man who put food on my table when my father sent me to Galea. I could never hurt him, not him. It’s strange, but I love you, and I always will. But what we had… it was never meant to be.”

“Peter… Why does it feel like you’re saying goodbye?”

“Because I am,” Peter said, his voice breaking, tears glistening in his eyes. “I’m leaving, Mary. I can’t stay in the same place knowing you’re here, knowing I might run into you at any moment. Maybe in another life, my dear Mary–maybe in another life, we could be together. But not in this one.”

Valerie’s breath hitched as she clutched his arm, her voice trembling with desperation. “I’ve only just found out you’re alive, and now you’re leaving? Don’t do this. Please, Peter, don’t!”
