Chapter 0906

Marcus and Valerie were having breakfast in the garden, watching as John excitedly talked to his younger siblings. He loved being a big brother. Even though Serenity was technically his oldest sister, he took his role as the older sibling very seriously, eager to teach his little brothers and sisters about the world.

Valerie, however, still felt unsettled. Last night had left her with a strange feeling–seeing Peter again had stirred something deep inside her. It was obvious that the man she once knew was gone. The Peter she had loved so intensely didn’t exist anymore. The only thing in his eyes now was love for her.

That woman…

Celeste.

She looked familiar, but no matter how much Valerie tried to remember, her mind couldn’t place where she had seen her before. And then there was Alden’s mother–an undeniably beautiful woman. Valerie didn’t know the full story, but Serenity had once mentioned that Katherine and Peter had shared a rather intense romance.

A part of her felt happy for him. If Peter was truly happy, then that was all that mattered.

And maybe it was better this way.

If he didn’t remember their time together, then perhaps it was for the best. Their past had been beautiful, yes, but it had also been painful. Maybe forgetting was a gift.

Marcus observed his wife. It was obvious that something was weighing on her. Since last night, she had seemed distant, lost in thought.

If there was one thing he had been working on, it was trust. He could see that Valerie was battling something internally–torn between her past and her present.

“Val, sweetheart, are you okay?” Marcus asked gently.

Valerie snapped out of her thoughts and turned to him, forcing a small smile.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” she said.

“You seem worried about something…”

“No, no, it’s just…” She hesitated. “Can I be honest with you?”

“Of course, love. What is it?”

Marcus knew this had everything to do with last night. And while everything had gone smoothly, watching his wife steal glances at her ex all night had been uncomfortable, to say the least.
