In the pitch–black night, Geoffrey stood frozen–faced, silently watching the fresh grave being dug open.

His heart leaped to his throat when a bodyguard finally stepped forward holding a cremation urn.

Geoffrey stood ramrod straight, his expression unreadable in the darkness.

During the return journey, Geoffrey remained eerily calm.

Normally transparent with his emotions, today nobody could tell whether he felt joy or sorrow.

Though sleep–deprived for days, he felt no drowsiness leaning against the headrest.

Geoffrey’s narrowed eyes gazed through the car window at Maureen’s childhood city, her face flooding his mind. while her voice seemed to echo:

“Geoff… I always wanted you to be happy…”

His throat tightened inexplicably.

Nobody noticed the reflection of Geoffrey’s chiseled features in the window, his eyes faintly rimmed with red.

In this world, nobody truly needs anyone else.

After Geoffrey brought Maureen’s ashes home, everyone who knew her accepted she was gone.

The same conclusion emerged when they found Gareth.

After brief sighs of pity, everyone resumed their calm lives.

Only Geoffrey was different.
