Maureen, still groggy, remained oblivious.

Exhaustion weighed her down, eyelids heavy as lead. Unable to stay upright, she leaned against Geoffrey.

Without hesitation, Geoffrey swept her up into his arms.

Resting against his broad back, Maureen surrendered to sleep. In her dreams, fire seemed to lick at her skin, a deep discomfort spreading through her limbs.

Alex watched Maureen drift off, his patience thinning. “Big brother,” he cut straight to the chase, “it’s time you returned what belongs to its rightful owner.”

Turning to leave, he shot Alex a final warning: “Employ these underhanded tricks again, and I won’t hold back.”

He turned to head back, only to find Elizabeth standing silently a short distance behind him.
