Chapter 615

I knew all too well the heft of a baseball; even if it didn't break bones, it could still leave a nasty bruise.

My instincts screamed at me to dodge, but before I could even make a move, I was wrapped in a pair of strong arms. The sound of a ball making contact echoed, followed by a series of similar thuds...

My vision was filled with balls flying towards me, and amidst them all, I was spinning, guided by Ernest.

His arm was hooked around my waist, moving me, dodging...

This scene, something I'd only ever seen through the magic of television special effects, was unfolding before my very eyes. More than once, I saw a ball flying straight for me, only to be steered away or blocked by Ernest at the last second. "Brown, enough! Stop it!" Conrad's voice pierced through the barrage of impacts, but to no avail.

I lost track of time, only aware that the balls kept coming like endless raindrops, and I could feel Ernest's movements slowing down.

He was getting tired.

As the sounds of impacts began to muffle, I knew Ernest wasn't dodging as effectively, taking hits in my stead.

"Ernest," I called out, anxious and heartbroken, but utterly helpless. And it was painfully clear to me that my being there was getting in his way.

I couldn't help him, but I refused to be a burden. I needed to find a way out.
