Chapter 491 The Saying Is True

"What?"

"What?"

Both David and Evelyn asked in unison.

As the words fell, the two exchanged a glance.

Back then, when Evelyn first learned that David had been unfaithful to her twenty years ago, that he even had an illegitimate child who was now old enough to attend university, she had her own bout of hysteria. Nonetheless, she quickly regained her composure, and the first question that came to her mind was whether she should divorce him.

The answer was no.

She knew that once they divorced, it would inadvertently pave the way for the mistress to force her way into the Tortell family. In other words, she'd be giving up everything to someone else without a fight. Sophia was, after all, the daughter David had raised by his side. Out of guilt, he had become increasingly indulgent toward her. If he were to pass away now, Sophia would surely inherit a substantial fortune. However, if the mistress were to join the Tortell family, that would be a different story.

David was in good health at the time, and it seemed inevitable that he would spend the next ten to twenty years with his mistress. Already, he had begun to contemplate handing over the reins of the company to his son. In ten to twenty years, Sophia would gradually be marginalized, and might even be ousted from the Tortell family.

From a young age, Sophia was quite carefree and simple-minded, lacking guile. She also had a bit of a stubborn streak. This undoubtedly made Evelyn very worried about her.

Already past the age of fifty, there wasn't much to look forward to in the latter half of life. At this point, divorce seemed meaningless to her. Instead of parting ways, she figured that it seemed better to uphold the status quo and fight for more for Sophia.

Once Evelyn decided against a divorce, she calmed down significantly. She had a thorough discussion with David, taking advantage of the lingering guilt within him to convince him to transfer a portion of his wealth under Sophia's name. And so, the two of them maintained a superficial peace currently.

"Don't be surprised." Sophia glanced at the two of them, a faint smile playing on her lips. "My boyfriend wants to come over and visit you guys tomorrow."

Taken aback, David and Evelyn shared a glance.

David slightly furrowed his brows, reprimanding in a low voice, "When did you get yourself a boyfriend? You never mentioned anything. Don't bring home someone of questionable character."

Evelyn looked at Sophia and nodded gently.

Sophia wasn't a naive and ignorant girl. The fact that she suggested bringing her boyfriend home either meant their relationship was profound, reaching a stage where marriage was on the table, or she had been deceived by sweet talk. From Evelyn's perspective, she believed it was certainly the latter.

"If he's a shady person, why did you introduce him to me?" Sophia raised an eyebrow.
