Chapter 101

My sneakers pounded on the forest floor and echoed through the quiet afternoon air, but the pounding of my heart was even louder in my ears. I couldn't hear Edwin behind me, not yet he was still at the starting line, giving me a head start before he shifted.

But then, suddenly, there was silence.

An eerie quiet fell over the woods, broken only by the rustling of leaves in the breeze. Even the birds went quiet, as thought there was a predator in their midst. Furrowing my brow, I slowed my pace slightly and chanced a look over my shoulder, wondering if Edwin had veered off in another direction.

But he hadn't. His enormous black wolf form was directly behind me, those yellow eyes glinting in the dappled sunlight. I could have sworn there was even a wolfish grin on his face.

A squeal of laughter escaped me as I pushed myself to run faster I darted between a nearby set of twin trees that I knew he couldn't fit through, leaped over a fallen log, and splashed through a small creek up ahead. My muscles burned with the effort and cold water sprayed up my bare legs, but the thrill of the chase kept me going.

"Can't catch me!" I called out, my voice breathless and giddy.

Edwin growled playfully in response, and the sound sent a shiver down my spine. He seemed content to let me lead for now, enjoying the pursuit rather than immediately overpowering me. I noticed the hem of my white skirt getting splattered with _mud as I ran, but I was having too much fun to care. This was exhilarating, unlike anything I had ever experienced before.

"Is that all you've got, Professor?" I taunted as I ducked under a low-hanging branch.

Just then, I felt a gentle warning nip at my heels. The unexpected contact startled me, and my foot caught on a protruding rock. I pitched forward with a yelp, my hands outstretched as I went tumbling toward the ground.

Before I could fully register what was happening, I felt Edwin's dark fur wrap around me. We rolled together, the forest whirling into a blur of shapes and colors and smells. We only came to a stop once we had reached the bottom of a small slope, just inches away from another small creek.

Gasping for air, I cracked my eyes open, and there he was: Edwin's wolf face, mere inches from mine, his intense gaze boring into me. His head was large enough to blot out the sun, its golden rays peeking through his dark fur and almost giving him a halo.

I swallowed hard, my eyes flicking over him. Edwin's wolf form cradled me away from the hard ground, like I had been caught on a dark cloud during my fall.

Without thinking, I reached out and tangled my trembling fingers in his fur. It was so soft, like a million different strands. were wrapping around my hand and brushing against my palm. His fur was so thick that my hand almost disappeared.
