Chapter 1765: a girl’s gotta stay out of prison

After hearing how these people operated, Penny was certain of one thing—Shawn was meant to die tonight, along with her. Their fates were already sealed if Shawn didn’t break down, and Penny didn’t have the chance to take control of the situation.

Shawn didn’t want to believe it at first. He wanted to doubt it. But deep down, he knew there was nothing to doubt.

Because what Penny said... was exactly what Jonathan would do.

It wasn’t like Shawn didn’t know that when he accepted the mission ten years ago. He already knew this would be his last mission. He just didn’t want to believe it.

Instead, he deluded himself and clung to the idea that he was needed. That he was helping his brothers and sisters. That he was helping the people he’d grown up with, and the very person who had saved them from that orphanage.

With that understanding, Penny told him to stick to the original plan: take her hostage and act like none of this ever happened, just in case someone was watching how it all played out.

Her words were: "Let’s talk about this later. Once we deal with them."

So Penny remained the hostage, and Shawn played the part of her captor. As they exited the office, Penny spotted someone approaching.

She didn’t think Shawn noticed, but if they ended up facing Teddy, Shawn would have to knock him out too. They had to assume they were being watched—and if Shawn didn’t act accordingly, they’d sabotage themselves.

Fortunately, Teddy managed to hide.

They continued with the plan—Shawn projecting control and Penny maintaining her quiet defiance.

That’s why, when Penny saw the man in the getaway car, she hissed at him one last time.

And Shawn—he just gave her a cold look... then injected her with the drug she had given him earlier.

Sure enough, it worked. It knocked her out. Though for a moment, he wondered if that too had been part of her act.

But after checking on her in the car, he knew it wasn’t. She was really out cold. He crawled into the back with her, making sure she’d wake up safe and in one piece.

Penny didn’t move — not even when they reached the helicopter.

But just as she instructed, Shawn tucked a pistol beneath the cloth she lay on. He did it because she asked him to... and because he wanted her to have something, just in case.
