Chapter 40
Crystal’s hand did not land on Emma’s face. On the contrary, she was stopped halfway by Trevor.
Trevor squeezed her wrist tightly and roared furiously, “What are you doing?!”
Crystal’s eyes immediately reddened with tears, but she stared at him and spoke with great restraint, “Trevor, she shamelessly came to you in the middle of the night to discuss work. What are her motives? Have you forgotten how you were tricked by her in the past?”
Emma had been filled with gratitude for a moment when Trevor helped to stop Crystal’s slap. However, hearing him shout out Crystal’s name immediately brought her back to her senses. That’s right. They’re about to get married. They’re a family now.
Just like the incident with Arianna, she believed that he stopped Crystal not because he wanted to protect her, but it was to keep Crystal in line. Crystal was not just a popular actress but also the future Mrs. Baleson, so slapping Emma in the face would not look good for both herself and the Bateson Family if word got out about this incident.
At that thought, Emma took a step back and curved her lips into a cold smile. She sneered at Crystal, “Miss Sanders, why don’t you ask Mr. Bateson why I showed up here in the middle of the night to discuss work?”
The mocking expression on her face made Trevor press the tip of the tongue against the back of his teeth strongly as he explained to Crystal grimly, “I called her here.”
Crystal’s expression was incredulous. She did not believe that Trevor was the kind of man who would call a woman over to his office to discuss work in the middle of the night. What’s more, that woman was his ex-wife. It was the ex-wife whom he once scorned and despised in every possible way.
Heedless of whether Crystal believed the explanation or not, Emma asserted with calm composure. “Crystal, when I made the decision to obtain a divorce back then, I never wanted anything to do with this man again in my life. A great man never looks back on the past, let alone for such an arrogant and selfish man. To be honest, I no longer care for a man like Mr. Bateson. So what if he has money and looks? It’s all worthless when he doesn’t have a heart.”
She simply wanted to use this opportunity to draw a line between her and Trevor so that Crystal would stop targeting her.
All she wanted was to focus on her career, so she was practically begging all the unrelated people like them to hurry up and disappear from her life. Those who should take a wife should take a wife, and those who should marry into wealth should marry into wealth.
Emma’s remarks made Trevor’s expression become incredibly ugly. In the past, she had used every means possible to climb into his bed, constantly told him that she loved him, and even did so much for his sake. How dare she disparage him in this manner now!
I’m arrogant and selfish?! I’m heartless?! Trevor was so enraged by her words that he felt as though all the organs in his body had been displaced. In the midst of all his anger, he also felt a little lost and disappointed. Could it be that she … doesn’t even miss me in the slightest?
After Emma clarified her current attitude toward him, she finally looked in his direction with a professional smile on her face. “Mr. Bateson, I don’t think we can finish our discussion tonight. I’ll be taking my leave now.”
Once she finished saying that, she calmly kept her laptop away and left in an unhurried manner. She took several steps before she seemed to recall something and turned back to remind him. “By the way, Mr. Bateson, please pick a time during the day to discuss work next time. Also, please choose a place with more people to prevent Miss Sanders from destroying her image out of jealousy. After all, she despises jealous wives who are consumed by jealousy and have poor public image the most. Don’t let her become the kind of person she looks down on the most.”
Emma happily picked up her bag and left after saying her piece. The phrases ‘jealous wife, ‘consumed by jealousy, and have poor public inage’ were all phrases that Crystal had said about her back then. Now, she threw all those phrases back at Crystal without exception, so how could she not enjoy the experience immensely?
“Emma!” Crystal was so furious that she screamed at Emma’s indifferent back. She had no intention of letting Emma leave just like that. It was just that Trevor was holding her by her wrist, so she could not move.
It wasn’t until Emma’s figure vanished that Trevor pushed Crystal away roughly. His strength was so great that she nearly lost her balance. She stumbled back by several steps before she grabbed the table by the side and regained her balance.
His voice was mixed with anger. “You caused such a huge mess. Are you satisfied now?”
“How dare you accuse me of causing trouble!” Her tears quickly flowed from her eyes as she aggrievedly tried to justify her actions. “Trevor, you were together with her in the middle of the night. Moreover, you were already in the process of removing her clothes when I entered the room. How dare you say that I am causing trouble?”
When he heard Crystal accusing him of removing Emma’s clothes, he only felt that she was being very unreasonable. “How did you see me taking off her clothes?! I accidentally spilled coffee on her, so I was just handing her some tissues.”
She wiped away her tears and sneered, “What do you mean you spilled coffee on her? I bet she spilled the coffee on purpose! That way, she can use the opportunity to remove her coat under the pretext that her clothes are dirty and seduce you!
Trevor couldn’t help scowling deeply at her words. Crystal herself is the one whose thoughts are so cunning and deep. Isn’t that why she believes the same of Emma? I’m the one who was involved in this incident. How can I not know how the coffee was spilled?
When he handed the coffee over to Emma, Emma had just turned on her computer. The screensaver on her computer was a photo of herself, in which she was smiling brightly at the camera.
That was a smile of happiness that came from the bottom of her heart. It was like a ray of light; it was so bright that it made his heart skip a beat.
