Chapter 80
Emma voiced out her question, and Susanna said bluntly, “Yep. Some people are that petty. They‘ll start to hate someone over something really trivial. Zola‘s an evil witch to begin with anyway. Wesley‘s the one who gave you the job, but I don‘t see her mocking him.” She snorted. “She‘s a loser who can‘t stand seeing someone better than her. What a joke.” Susanna continued, “Oh, you might not know this, but I heard she has a crush on Wesley. Probably why she hates you more.”
“She has a crush on Mr. Zurich?” Emma was shocked.
“Yeah. I overheard someone talking about it.” Susanna grumbled again, “She really needs to look in the mirror more. I‘d rather not talk about her looks, since look shaming doesn‘t vibe with me. But honestly, Wesley would never fall for someone so petty and vile like her.”
Susanna was not slandering her. Zola was infamous among authors and scriptwriters. She thought she was a bigshot because she authored a few popular books and had some diehard fans. She spent most of her time creating drama and slandering anyone she disliked. She was despicable. Emma knew about that, but she thought drama would not catch up to her just yet.
She could feel Zola‘s enmity ever since Eleanor picked her over Zola as her apprentice. Still, shc ignored Zola, as she only cared about her family and Trevor back then. I see I‘ve been too laidback. She said, “I‘ll have to deal with drama if I want to blend in. Skills alone won‘t get me too far.”
Susanna cheered her on. “Rise up, Emma!”
Emma burst into laughter.
Cerys woke up the next morning with a bit of a hangover. Emma made her some porridge. She took her seat at the dining table and asked stiflly, “I didn’t say anything stupid last night, did I?”
“No.” Emma smiled. “You kept yourself under control and went to sleep right away.”
“I see.” Cerys heaved a sigh of relief. She would be embarrassed if Emma found out that someone like her fell for someone out of her league. She never told anyone, since she wanted to keep it a secret. Last night, she heard that he might be getting into an arranged marriage, and her heart shattered into a million pieces. She knew she was just a lowly secretary, but the thought of hin getting inarried still broke her. I will never have a chance if he gets married. She failed to hold herself back and drank more than she should. The alcohol did not help though. She was still broken hearted after she sobered up.
Emma ladled a bowl of porridge for her, pretending she had heard nothing. “Have
some porridge. It‘ll help.” “Yeah.” Cerys held her sadness in and slurped the porridge.
Cerys went to work after breakfast. Einma cleared her table and was about to go back to work, but Wesley called her. “Emma, are you free right now?”
She asked, “What do you need?”
Wesley paused for a moment before saying, “Then come to the company. Someone‘s here for you.”
Emma had a bad fecling about this. “Is it my dad and my brother?” ;
“Yeah.” Wesley sounded solemn. “They wanted to see you. Said you wouldn‘t even provide for your father.”
Emma was trembling with rage. “I‘ll be right there.”
She had underestimated how low they could go. Emma had no idea they would cause a ruckus at Alpha Productions, but this also proved that they were stupid. They want money. How are they gonna get that if I‘m fired and unemployed?
She hung up and washed her face, then she took a few deep breaths to calm down. She was planning on confronting Steven and Simon after she got the palernity test result, but she did not expect them to have spent all the money so soon, nor did she expect them to demand more from her. She hurried to her company. Those a*sholes. Leeching of a lady‘s hard work? How low can they go? She called Kaleb on her way to work and asked if the results were out.
“I just asked my colleague. He said that it‘ll be out by noon.” Kaleb asked, “Did they come lo you again?”
“No. I was just asking.” She did not want him to know that they were at her company. She was worried he might tell Trevor.
Kaleb said, “Good to hear. I‘ll give you the results once I get them this afternoon.”
“Thanks.” She hung up.
When she came to Alpha, she was told that Wesley had summoned Simon and Steven to his office. She hurried into the elevator and went up to Wesley‘s office, but the moment she came out of the elevator, she ran into Zola and her assistant.
Zola‘s assistant was a woman named Becky. Emma knew her name when she asked around previously. She was in a hurry to deal with her deadbeat family, so she tried to go past them. She wanted to avoid a confrontation, but Zola was not about to let her go.
Becky mocked, “You can‘t judge a book by its cover. Some women might look gentle, but they‘re actually evil on the inside. I can‘t believe some people would refuse to provide for their own father.”
Emina was not surprised they knew. Her deadbeat family were troublemakers. The whole Alpha must have known by now, but Emma had to say that Zola was a scheming person. She would never get her hands dirty whenever arguments were involved. Her poor assistant would take the brunt of those arguments. She looked like she did not care, but her assistant would never argue with anyone without her permission.
Emma was already in a bad mood because of her family, and Becky‘s sarcastic remark made her snap. She decided to fight back. Emma looked at Becky calmly. “Some people love to jump the gun before they know the whole truth. Careful with the backfire. You might slip and kill yourself.”
“Why you…” Becky was at a loss for words as had no idea Emma would fight back so calmly.
Emma paid no attention to her and left. Emma had reflected on herself after taking Susanna‘s call the night before. She was a pacifist who would rather not argue if she could. It was a good thing, but it was not good if she kept relenting. With every inch she gave, someone would try to take a mild. Trevor, Crystal, the Batesons, Steven, Simon, and even Zola were prime examples. She had to toughen up. She would never attack anyone who stayed away from her, but she would not stand for anyone who tried to push her down. She would push back.
