Chapter 96
Trevor did not expect her to be out. He thought she would just stay at home and write her script, judging from the kind of person she was. Now that he was sure she was not home, he could only leave. He did not reply to Emma‘s text after some thought and pretended he didn‘t see it. Now that he calmed down, he realized that coming all the way to her place just to have a bowl of her ramen was stupid. It was like he missed her.
Emma heaved a sigh of relief after she noticed that Trevor was not replying. Good thing he didn‘l text back. It‘d be hard for me to deal with.
The ladies had a happy gathering, but the Sanders were in a bad mood. Crystal came to her parents‘ place on purpose tonight. She was waiting for her father to give her the answer Trevor told him.
Crystal was out of it, and her mother tried to get her to eat. “You‘re just going to hurt yourself if you starve.” She assured Crystal, “Your father will settle this. And besides, nobody in Jonestown is more suited for him. You guys used to date, and our families are friends. He has to choose you.”
Rosalina managed to comfort Crystal a little, but the thought of Trevor acting so cold lately still irked her. She never told anyone she never had sex with Trevor, not even her mother. Everyone might have seen them coming out of hotels a few times after
Trevor‘s divorce, but they never actually had sex before.
“Here, have this. I made it specially for you. It makes you look prettier” Rosalina gave her a bowl of soup, and Crystal barely took a sip.
The ladies thought the dinner would go on for a long time, but Thomas came back just a moment later. Crystal‘s heart sank when she saw how upset her father was. The talks broke down. She teared up and started crying.
“Oh my,” Rosaline said. She asked her husband, “You‘re early. Was it that bad?”
Thomas said coldly, “He told me Crystal‘s not suited for marriage. Said marriage and dating are two different things. He‘s burning his bridges! I will not stand for this! My daughter spent years on him!” Thomas roared furiously.
Parents always protected their children, but he forgot that Crystal broke up with Trevor because she did not want to marry him. He forgot that Trevor had never given Crystal his answer over the last year. They confidently thought Trevor still loved Crystal. They thought he only divorced Emma so he could marry Crystal. Naturally, they flew into a rage when reality was different from their expectations,
Rosalina said indignantly, “He got that from his father! Bateson men are all scum!”
Crystal plopped down on the couch while covering her face and crying. “Why? Why?” She thought Trevor would agree if her father just pressured him into this. She had no idea why this happened. He loves me. We almost got married, so why did he refuse? She sobbed for a long while before hissing, “It‘s all Emma‘s fault! This is her fault!”
Rosalina was confused. “His ex–wife? What does she have to do with this? They‘ve been divorced for more than a year, havent they?”
Crystal gnashed her teeth. “She came back. She‘s working on the same show as Trevor.”
Rosalina frowned. “Did she seduce him again? But it‘s useless. He doesn‘t like her, does he? That‘s the point of the divorce, wasn‘t it?” Rosalina did not care about Emma.
She thought the relationship would not last long, since Emma came from a regular background. Even though Trevor married her, she never thought Emma could be a threat to her daughter, and she still did not see her as a threat now. They knew Trevor did not love Emma, and he shrugged her off all the time during their marriage. Wow, if he falls for her after the divorce, then that‘d be a big sal joke, Rosalina thought.
“Mom, I just have a feeling she‘s the reason this happened.” Crystal thought Emma was the reason Trevor suddenly called the marriage off. She based that on nothing but instinct.
“She‘s just a divorced woman. She can‘t do anything.” Rosalina still thought nothing of her. “Don‘t give up. Try and sec if you can repair your relationship with Trevor.”
“Repair what?” Thomas disagreed. He roared, “He‘s not the only man in Jonestown. Don‘t lose sight of the forest over one tree!‘ Thomas was infuriated by Trevor‘s arrogance. He thought Trevor respected him, but he never expected the boy to embarrass him so thoroughly. He did not even want to see him or marry Crystal off to him. Ego maltered more to him than his life at times.
Rosalina frowned. “But he‘s the best one in the city, and besides, we only called Crystal back because we thought Trevor had a great future ahead of him.”
Thomas had no argument for that. Crystal had a boyfriend when she was studying abroad, and they did not care about Trevor back then. However, they did not expect Trevor to shine so brilliantly after he took over the company. The first thing they did was list Trevor as the best son–in–law they could hope for. They talked with Crystal, and she agreed to their arrangement. She broke up with her boyfriend the next day and came back to Jonestown.
Crystal had been looking dejected. She suddenly said, “I don‘t care. I want to marry him! Only him!” And then she covered her mouth and ran outside.
Rosalina quickly stopped her. “What are you doing, Crystal?”
Crystal ran outside as she cried. “I‘m going for a walk. Leave me alone!”
Rosalina pulled her back. “We can‘t let you go out all by yourself! Not when you‘re in this condition!”
Crystal flung her hand away and swept the vase on the cabinet to the ground. “I‘d rather die if I can‘t marry Trevor!” She went to the other side and smashed her father‘s priceless porcelain collection to vent her anger.
