Nadine realized with growing horror that she hadn't brought any money. Worse yet, she didn't even have her phone with her. Her pockets were completely empty.

The vendor looked at her expectantly, waiting for her to pay. After watching her pat herself down and search every inch of her jacket without pulling out a single thing, the smile on his face froze. "You want it for free? It's just cotton candy. You can't even afford that?"

His eyes traveled over her well-fitted clothes, and he figured she couldn't possibly be from a poor family. There was no way she didn't have ten dollars.

Noticing the vendor's scowl, Nadine hurriedly apologized, "I'm so sorry, I forgot my phone! Could you lend me yours for just a minute to make a call?" With no cash and no other option, she had to ask the vendor for help.

The vendor shot her a condescending look. "You don't have any money? Then, why are you even out and about? What century are you living in? Who leaves their house without their phone? Let me guess, you're one of those scammers trying to trick me into handing over my phone!"
