Nick was startled by her words. He narrowed his eyes, looking at her dazed expression, and immediately lost interest. He lay back, feeling frustrated-it wasn't easy to get himself going at his age. But with Wendy, he usually didn't have that problem; her figure was flawless.

In contrast, Jennifer's mother had gained weight over the years and wasn't as vibrant or beautiful as before. Yet she was his childhood sweetheart, his first love, the one who still stirred his heart. "It wasn't Jennifer," he said lightly. "Natalie is behind this. Jennifer is so kind; she'd never do something like that."

He, too, found it strange that those two men would turn against them despite being paid.

Wendy sneered. She'd been utterly foolish, joining Nick, Jennifer, and her four sons in constantly punishing her own daughter.

Every misunderstanding and insult had been pure agony for Natalie, a living nightmare.

Wendy knew all too well the pain of being misunderstood; she'd experienced it herself.

Natalie had endured far too much. Thinking about the suffering her daughter had endured all these years, she wanted to slap herself.

Natalie was her own flesh and blood, yet she'd never once truly believed in her. Now she'd broken her daughter's heart beyond repair, and Natalie no longer wanted anything to do with her mother.

Wendy knew she had only herself to blame. It turned out everything had been Jennifer and Nick's scheme, even enlisting her four disappointing sons. None of them amounted to much, and they hardly ever came home. Wendy's eldest son, obsessed with car racing, poured most of his company's earnings into the costly hobby.
