Chapter 728

Greta lay on the cold ground, eyes fixed on Cameron as he sprinted away, leaving her behind. Nina clung to Cameron's neck, flashing a wicked, almost sinister smile at Greta. It was a smile far too knowing and triumphant for a child.

"Mom, did you see that?" Greta asked, her voice tinged with disbelief.

"See what?” her mother, Miranda, replied, her attention fully on Greta until she heard her daughter's words.

"Nina was smiling," Greta said, an uneasy chill running through her.

Miranda looked up, but by then, Nina and Cameron had vanished through the door. "Greta, they're gone," she said, her tears soaking through her blouse. "How could Cameron be so heartless? Leaving you here when you're much sicker than Nina?"

She maneuvered Greta's wheelchair closer, straining to help her up. But Greta, weakened by illness and the weight of Lincoln's revenge, collapsed back to the ground. Her ankle, peeking from beneath her dress, was swollen and shiny.

Miranda's hands trembled as she pressed gently on it, watching a deep indentation form. She broke into sobs, "What are we going to do?"
