Chapter 36 Lines in the Sand

Aubrey’s POV

Whatever his problem was, it had nothing to do with me. I hadn’t provoked him, hadn’t even spoken to him lately.

So I turned and walked away.

“Get in the car,” Alpha Henry said again.

I let out a dry laugh. Was this guy serious? I’d already cut ties with him. What did he think this was?

I kept walking. But how could I outrun a car?

“Get in. Don’t make me say it a third time.”

That finally got me to glance back.

“Alpha, do you not understand words? I’ve already broken off the engagement. We have nothing to do with each other now. Why the hell would I get in your car?”

Henry’s POV

Damn it. When did Aubrey turn into someone like this? She was all thorns now–sharp and untouchable. After I left the station yesterday, I didn’t go home. I started digging into the incident from nine years ago- when I nearly drowned.

Too much time had passed. Most of the evidence was long gone. I was furious… but powerless.

I’d planned to confront Mariana, but all I could see in my head was the moment Aubrey kissed me–and then bit me. The look in her eyes was burned into me. That quiet pain, that total despair.
