Kex let go of me and sank to his knees beside the grave, his head bowed in shame. “I’m so sorry,” he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. “I don’t know if you can ever forgive me.”

I placed my hands on his shoulders, and he looked up at me, his eyes red..
