Chapter 1837

As the clock struck seven, it was time for the groom to come and whisk the bride away. Jenna had been on edge, keeping a keen ear out, while Sophie, standing in the bedroom, thought she heard the low hum of a car engine outside.

"They're here," Sophie announced.

Jenna was momentarily thrown off. "Here? Where exactly?"

They hadn't actually heard the car pull up yet, but soon enough, the sound of footsteps echoed up the stairs.

"They're coming, they're coming! Sophie, you've got ears like a hawk!"

But then, the footsteps halted right outside the door.

Jenna felt a sudden wave of anticipation, as if some sort of presence was pressing in through the door.

"Gordon?" Jenna asked, her voice cautious.

"Yes." Gordon's voice came through, clear and direct.
