Zev and Kelly sat together on the couch, a thick tension hanging between them. Zev, still nursing the aftermath of his injuries, was frustrated-his legs were far from healed, but at least his waist had improved. That small victory did little to ease his growing sense of impatience.

Kelly, however, had long since grown accustomed to striking him. Before she could stop herself, her hand whipped out, landing a firm slap across his face. The sharp sound echoed in the room.

Zev blinked, stunned. His fingers flew to his cheek as he leaned into her, his gaze wide and incredulous. "Why do you keep hitting me?"

Kelly froze, her eyes widening with a mix of surprise and guilt. She had done it so many times it had almost become reflex.

It wasn't right before, but now-things were different.
