When Nicole returned home, she saw a tall figure waiting by the door. She froze for a moment before she took a big step forward. Then, she quickly recognized this person as Zachary via streetlight.

"Zach," her lips trembled as she called out in a soft voice.

When Zachary heard his name, he slowly turned around. He lowered his eyes and looked at her; his whole aura exuded warmth. "Nicky," he replied with a smile.

She hid the exhaustion on her face and smiled. "Well, why did you come over? Are you finished with the company's business?"

He took a step forward and rested a hand on her shoulder, which caused her to stiffen, but she did not shake him off.

He replied, "I'm almost done. What about you?"

She was briefly taken aback, so she looked up at Zachary and asked in confusion, "Mine? What business are we talking about?"

He pursed his lips and relayed gently, "I heard about it when I was abroad. There was news that your mother hit and killed the old matriarch of the Gardner Family and that it was a hit-and-run."

Nicole let out a bitter laugh. It seemed like news spread like wildfire, especially ones that were bad. Hence, she decided not to hide anything from Zachary and confessed, "The investigation is over and done with. It wasn't my mother but William."

Zachary knew a thing or two about Nicole's family. Although she and William had broken off their father-daughter relationship, it is undeniable that they share the same blood.

"Then… what about the Gardner Family?" Zachary asked cautiously.

At the thought of this, she slowly shook her head. A trace of sadness and agony flashed across her eyes. "The Gardner Family will not hold it against me."

Zachary has been with her for so long that he can make educated guesses based on her minute expressions.

His eyes darkened slightly at what he was seeing. Although he had not seen her in a few months, he was aware that she and Colton were close.

And, as a man, he could see that Colton also liked Nicole!

If something like this really happened to the Gardner and Anderson families, this could mean that there was no chance of Colton and Nicole becoming an item.

Zachary couldn't help but despise himself when he felt elated after realizing there was no possibility between Nicole and Colton.

Nonetheless, he hid his real feelings behind the matter and comforted her.

"Nicky, there's no need for you to be sad. This isn't your fault. Besides, the Anderson Family has had nothing to do with you for a long time."
