As if she had predicted Nicole's expression, Siobhan smiled subtly and continued, "This is my opinion after giving it a lot of thought. I've brought this up with my husband, who agrees with me."

Feeling as if her heart stopped beating, Nicole only regained her senses after a while. Her lips trembled before she finally uttered, "Madam Gould, this is inappropriate."

Siobhan seemingly knew her worries and replied, "Are you afraid Evelyn would not agree to this?"

A bitter smile crept on Nicole's face as she pondered it before saying, "Madam Gould, I think you should be well aware of how much your daughter detests me."

Evelyn hated her so much that she poisoned her to frame her. With this level of hatred, her life might inevitably be in danger if she agreed to become Siobhan's foster daughter.

"Whatever her father and I decide, it isn't for her to object. Nicole, the reason why I wanted to adopt you as my daughter was not that you saved me this time. It's because I know you're capable yet lack a chance to grow. If you become my foster daughter, the Gould Family will have infinite resources that you can use, including the Wrenns'."

Siobhan's glimmering amber eyes stared straight at her.

Naturally, Nicole knew about the enormous power both families wielded. Everyone owned a chance to reach the top if they could simply befriend them.

However, she did not need this opportunity, for she stood up briskly and stated, "Madam Gould, thank you for your goodwill, but after thinking about it, I'll pass. Since I'm an outsider, it'd be inappropriate for me to butt into your family."

With an offer as enticing as a chest of gold, Siobhan did not once expect that she would be rejected. She pursed her lips and thought, I can't seem to fathom what she's thinking. This is a first for me.

As silence permeated the air, stillness infiltrated, converting the cheerful atmosphere into awkwardness.

"Do you know what kind of god given chance you've just thrown away?" Siobhan asked after a long pause.

Smiling, Nicole replied, "Of course I do, but not every chance comes without a cost. I genuinely thank you for your gesture, Madam Gould. Although it's not comparable to the Wrenns or the Goulds, I think I'm satisfied with my current life, seeing that the money I earn is enough to support myself and my kids. Besides, I'm not one with big ambitions. I don't want to achieve anything grand in life. I just want to live life stably."

Despite hearing her rejection, Siobhan did not get angry, for she smiled understandingly. Waving her hand, she commented, "That's a shame. I also thought that we were fated to meet, and I like you a lot too, but I respect your decision."

Seeing how Siobhan did not make it hard on her, Nicole quickly stood up and thanked her politely, "Madam Gould, thank you for your affection. However, someone like me isn't suitable for the upper echelons of society." She rejected her beautifully.
