Chapter 833

While Colton heard what Evelyn said, her voice seemed strangely distant and muffled. He could tell someone was trying to communicate with him, but he could not comprehend what was being said. Then, when he tried to speak, he realized his throat was so parched that he could barely utter a sound.

As soon as she noticed something odd about his behavior, she swiftly grabbed his arm. Her voice rang with phony concern as she spoke, "Collie, what's wrong? You don't seem in good shape."

He swallowed his saliva and managed to get some words out of his dry throat, though they came out hoarse. When Colton turned to look at Evelyn, his dark eyes glinted, but his vision was so blurry that he could only make out a hazy outline of a person. Nevertheless, he was no fool, and after some reflection, he deduced that everything that had transpired was a ruse. I've been on guard, but when have I been drugged? At that moment, he reached out to push her away, and though the drug had rendered his entire body weak, he was strong.

As a result of the push, she staggered backward and nearly fell to the ground, but a wall was behind her, and she could maintain her balance with her fumbling hands. Her eyes were brimming with tears when she looked at him and uttered, "Collie, I'm worried because you look sick."

Suddenly, Colton painfully pinched himself on the arm, and the pain momentarily brought him to his senses. His brilliant, unclouded eyes slowly ascended and settled on her. Then, he warned in a stern tone, "Evelyn, what did you do to me?"

Fear etched itself across Evelyn's face as she sobbed, "Colton, I-I did nothing. I wanted to let you know that my mom has decided to adopt Nicole." There was a pause, and tears began to well up in her eyes. Then, as if she had a sudden recollection, she continued, "I brought you here because mom hasn't made up her mind. I was worried others might overhear our conversation, so I needed to speak with you privately."

While listening to her, he became distracted and unable to concentrate. Soon, he attempted to use pain to drive away the fog that had settled over his mind, but to no avail; the pain had lost its power to counteract the drug's effects.

A gleam of triumph lit her eyes, but she persisted in her actions while she drew nearer to him and said, "Colton, you look pale. Are you okay? Should I call a doctor?"

At that moment, his chest tightened, and he pushed her away as he fought for air. Then, while clenching his teeth in rage, he seethed, "Scram."

Despite being pushed away, her eyes remained teary, and she continued to inch closer.

When Colton began to experience waves of heat surging through his body, he realized he had been given an aphrodisiac. An expression of remorse flashed across his face as he bit his lip. Darn! When did I get drugged? After giving it some thought, he reasoned that the food he had eaten earlier had been laced with the drug.
