“Jesse!” Nina protested, clearly not thrilled.

He raised an eyebrow. “You really want him seeing your messy room? Your desk’s still covered in hair ties and those little flower clips Uncle Alan used this morning.”

Nina paused, remembering. Right, her uncle had helped her with her hair earlier, and she hadn’t cleaned up since.

With a reluctant pout, she let Jesse take Jerome instead.

Alan watched the two boys disappear down the hall, then gently guided Nina back toward her room.

As they walked, Nina looked up, her tone serious. “Uncle Alan, wake me up when Jerome wakes up, okay?”

Alan smiled. “Of course. But hey—can I ask you something?” He continued without waiting for her reply, “Do you like him that much?”
