A flicker of unease slipped past Melvin’s usually composed expression. He was always the picture of poise, but every time she complimented him, it threw him off just a little.

“The car is mine. I didn’t say anything before because I was worried you’d think I had some hidden agenda,” Jessica said. Her thoughts cleared up in that moment, thanks to the excuse Melvin had given her. “That’s why I stayed quiet.”

“What kind of car do you like?” Melvin asked her outright, no hesitation in his tone.

“Come with me to the dealership tomorrow,” Jessica said brightly, happily accepting his offer. “You can help me pick one out.”

“Alright.” Melvin nodded in agreement. He never had much of a thing for cars. Even with all his money, he only owned three—what more did he need? Most of the time, he just used the company cars for meetings and trips anyway.
