“If Jerome hung out with other girls over the break and got closer to them than you, would you be okay?” Jesse cut in, knowing Nina’s words might sting Jerome a bit.

Nina tilted her head. “I’d be happy for him.” Jerome blinked, caught off guard.

Jesse was just as stunned.

“My teacher says we should make lots of friends,” Nina said with earnest eyes. She wasn’t clingy about much. “Jerome’s kinda shy. If he made more friends, I’d be thrilled for him.”

Jesse had a light bulb moment. He and Jerome, a bit more grown-up than most kids, held on tighter to the people they cared about.

But Nina? She was different. If someone shared her passions, she’d play with them, no fuss. Her world was simple and open.
