Back at the house, they all sat down to have lunch together. Afterwards, the kids went upstairs, and Freya and Ellis stayed downstairs to chat with Kristian. At first, the conversation was just polite pleasantries. They thanked him for looking after the kids and apologized in case either of them had been too much to handle. Once that part was over, Freya didn’t know what else to say. She was, as usual, a pro at killing conversations.

“You guys keep chatting,” Freya said cheerfully, rising from her seat. “I’ll go grab some snacks.”

Neither of them stopped her. They both knew she just wanted a reason to duck out.

With her gone, the air between the two men shifted just slightly.

Ellis, lounging on the couch across from Kristian, casually asked, “Want something to drink?”

“No, thanks,” Kristian answered.

“You sure?” Ellis raised an eyebrow at his empty glass.

“This place’s almost like a second home to me,” Kristian replied in a flat tone. “If I want something, I’ll get it myself.”
