Silly Bride novel (Winnie and Xavier)
Chapter 412
“Are you crazy? Do you hear yourself?” Winnie was stunned, frowning as she looked at him in disbelief.
“What do you think? Do I look like I'm still drunk?” Harold looked pleased when he saw Winnie's face turn pale.
He loved to mess with other people's mind.
In comparison to simply killing someone, he preferred to instill fear in able-bodied people and watch them suffer in agony before slowly descending to their doom.
However, his hands were tied and he had not been able to behave in his usual ruthless manner since he left Lightspring for Avenport.
As such, he could only resort to petty mind games to torture Winnie, break her heart, and make her lose hope.
“I said the scars on your body are ugly and revolting. Which part of that sentence do you not comprehend?” he added.
Winnie was still in shock, and she blurted out, “What's wrong with you tonight? Did you have one too many, or did something terrible happen? Who have you spoken to? Did you get a call from your dad?”
Other than Benjamin, she couldn't think of anyone else who could have given Xavier that idea.
“I'm not drunk. Even if I am, a drunk mind speaks a sober heart. Haven't I spoken the truth? Do you think those worm-like scars on you look beautiful? They are disgusting!” Harold was amused by the sight of Winnie desperately trying to find a reasonable explanation for the bewildering development.
“Are you feeling mentally disturbed again? Did you take your medication while you were away in Alendor?” Winnie asked worriedly.
It was Harold's turn to frown.
He realized the only reaction he got from Winnie was how her face turned slightly pale from shock. The latter was not at all infuriated by his insulting words. It wasn't the response he expected.
As if that wasn't surprising enough, she even turned around to get her phone from the bedside table.
What is she doing?
Caught off guard, he marched over and growled, “What are you doing?”
She ignored him and activated the voice assistant on her phone instead.
“Call Dr. Houghton,” she commanded.
Instantly, Josiah's number was retrieved and dialed.
Ever since he arrived in Avenport, Harold had been spying on Xavier. Naturally, he was aware that Dr. Houghton was Josiah, but he had no idea what illness Xavier had suffered from previously.
Knowing his plans would be screwed up if Josiah was to turn up, he hurriedly snatched the phone from her hand, canceled the call, and threw the phone onto the bed.
Before Winnie could protest, he started accusing her, chiding, “Why are you calling Josiah at this hour? Are the two of you having an affair behind my back?”
Winnie's brows knitted tightly as she answered, “If you're not drunk, then you're very sick. I need to get Josiah to come over and give you a check-up. At the very least, he can prescribe some medication to help with your hangover.”
“Shut up! Stop talking about Josiah! You rejected me earlier but now you're going on and on about Josiah. How shameless!” Harold howled.
“Shameless? I think you're brainless!” Winnie couldn't be bothered whether the man in front of her was drunk or crazy anymore. She had to teach him a lesson and stand up for herself.
Nevertheless, she quickly suppressed her rising anger and the impulse to hit him.
Although she was a woman, it would still be considered domestic violence if she were to hit her partner. She had no wish to escalate the situation.
Moreover, she felt she was the reason for Xavier's accident, so she made up her mind to practice self-control and only as a last resort, act in self-defense if he was to resort to violence.
She took a deep breath, then turned around to grab a pillow and hurled it at him.
“Get out! I don't want to see you tonight!” she yelled.
Harold's face fell instantly after being hit by the flying pillow.
Looking down at the pillow in his hand, he had a sudden strong urge to smother Winnie with that pillow.
Just as he was about to approach her with the pillow in hand, the door to the room swung open.
It was Mary who brought some hangover medication.
She hesitated and waited outside the room for a while as she had overheard their quarrel and the insulting language Xavier was using.
When she realized the confrontation in the room was getting more intense, she became concerned for Winnie. Worried that the drunk Xavier might do something to hurt Winnie, she gathered her courage and entered the room.
Upon seeing Mary, Harold suppressed his anger and aborted his menacing plan.
Mary found the tense vibe in the room suffocating and couldn't wait to get out.
She immediately brought over the medication and said, “Mr. Xavier, here's some hangover medication for you.”
Harold gave her a dirty look and sarcastically said, “You came in at just the perfect time!”
