Stanley saw several children around his age or older squatting in a corner of the courtyard, looking at him curiously.

Stanley grew uneasy when he noticed they were staring at him. He knew that something was amiss. When he took a close look at the other children, he realized what the problem was.

There were about ten children in front of him. They were wearing tattered clothes and appeared disheveled like beggars on the streets.

Some had lost their arms, some had lost a leg, and some were blind in one eye.

The more Stanley looked, the more frightened he was. He had thought Kate was trying to scare him with her words to stop him from complaining to his father.

He finally understood that Kate was not joking when he witnessed the scene before him. She really intended to teach him a lesson
